Why We Like This Place
Although its setting in the rolling, oak-studded hills of Santa Barbara’s wine country is a picturesque one, Gainey Vineyard is earning a reputation for something other than its native good looks. With its year-round program of tastings, tours and concerts, the winery has become a purveyor of both fine wine and culture. The combination has met with success: All of Gainey’s varietal wines have won coveted gold medals, while big names like Randy Newman, Count Basie, Emmylou Harris, Diana Krall, Lucinda Williams and Al Jarreau have been among the acts providing the music. Gainey Vineyard has over 20 years of experience hosting special events and weddings. The site’s natural beauty can’t help but attract couples from miles around, and when they get here, the bride and groom will find a supportive and energetic staff.
As you approach the winery, you get your first glimpse of its visual appeal. Ninety acres of premium grapevines spread out on either side of the long entry drive, which ends in a sweep around a circular courtyard in front of the hacienda-style winery building. The Tasting Room inside is a handsome space for intimate gatherings. Spanish tile floors, dramatic lighting and a grand-scale fireplace give it a country-casual ambiance. Adjacent to the Tasting Room is the Wine Cellar, a long room whose walls are stacked with floor-to-ceiling bottles of aging wine. Add tables outfitted with linens, candelabras and bowls of fruit for a glowing Tuscan-style reception, or follow your own vision. The spacious Barrel Room, lined with casks of aging wine, is another option for a warm, elegant dinner.
Receptions also take place right outside on the Patio, a grassy open-air courtyard bordered on one side by a grapevine-covered trellis. At the end of the trellis, a barbecue and kitchen prep area make outdoor catering easy. Leafy rows of Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot grapes frame the Patio’s uphill side, where two stately heritage oaks create a majestic focal point.
The Vineyard View Picnic Area, with its two massive oaks and commanding vistas, is the facility’s most popular site for ceremonies. Couples say their vows on a raised grassy “stage” beneath one of the oaks, while their guests enjoy not only the moment but the view: acres of vineyards and the Santa Ynez Mountains in the distance.
Gainey’s oldest event site is The Old Homestead, built in the 1890s. Located a half mile from the winery, this rustic barn is a terrific spot for dancing, and the expansive area around it makes a wonderful setting for either a western-style celebration or an upscale casual affair. Rolling hills, a nearby creek and shady oaks provide the scenery.
If Gainey Vineyard sounds like the kind of place where you’d like to get married or throw a party, come by for a wine tasting and take in a concert. After you’ve sampled its wine, song and pastoral surroundings, Gainey is sure to rank high on your list.
