The Great One: Vera Wang

It must nice to be a fashion icon. As Sex and the City’s fictional wedding coordinator definitively told an engaged Charlotte: “I have just 2 words for you—Vera Wang.”
But the woman who revolutionized wedding dress design is herself rather demure and understated—it’s surprising, really, when you see her photos and interviews. One would expect the arrogance and glamour of a movie star walking down the red carpet, flashbulbs popping, to accept another award.

But quietly, persistently, and with the taste and style for which her name is synonymous, Vera has extended her empire from dresses to accessories to jewelry, then the requisite eponymous perfume, now housewares, linens… mattresses!... Is there no end to what this woman can do? And Martha Stewart better watch her back: Now Vera’s actually become accessible. The barrier to the common woman—price—has been removed, since the launch of Ms. Wang’s exclusive Simply Vera line at Kohl’s department stores.
After seeing a Vera-Kohl’s commercial for the first time, I confess: I immediately went to my computer and window-shopped. Items from her collection are at the top of my Holiday Wish List.
And if you are shopping for your wedding dress instead of casual wear, you can now find a real Vera at Bridal Galleria, one of San Francisco’s largest bridal salons. (So Cal ladies should visit The White Dress in Corona del Mar for their Vera Wang store-in-store.)
My one complaint about Vera—her models look suicidal. Malnourished, pale and downright miserable! Is that any way to celebrate your wedding? I prefer the vibrant, freshness of Kirstie Kelly’s runway divas, one of the only designers whose models actually SMILED while walking the catwalk of last season’s New York wedding market.
So here’s what I want to know: Who out there plans a visit to Kohl’s to get their “Vera Look” on the cheap??

Finally, I took a long look at the Simply Vera line. I had not come face to face with it even though I am a Fashion & Style writer based in New York, (check out my new book/website at Justtryiton.com, ) because there is not a Kohls in Manhattan! I pulled off the road in Oklahoma City just to see the great ones offerings. Admittedly it looked different on the racks, not as glam and as polished on the web. The belted trenches were eyecatching but none of the ‘sensible’ colors were left, only washed out pea green, a tough color for any but the darkest of skin tones to pull off. And vice versa with the dresses: only the sensible colors were left, navy chiffon with taupe satin ribbon trim, no ruby red strappy numbers I had looked forward to and seen on the web. I tried on the Navy dress anyway, but the proportions were really off for a shorter body frame, alterations would have been prohibitively expensive. I did like the simplicity of the origami-inspired jackets, they felt very Vera, but again, not suited to my personal body type, so no. But I didnt leave empty handed. I purchased a burnt gold party skirt for a friend who is of more normal size 6 proportions (I knew Vera’s sizings for Kohls would be larger than her regular line—I picked a size 4 and it was perfect)and would go look again for me when new stock hits the racks.
I have followed Vera Wang for several years, and just love the clothes! A truly great designer!
I LOVE my Simply Vera faux-two layer v-necked cardigan in black and gray! It’s flattering and has two adorable pockets in the front. That the tent-like babydoll dresses that I’m seeing everywhere this year probably only look good on malnourished runway models.
The model for Vera Wang is simply UGLY. She has twisted legs, no expressions, looks mindless and just BLAH. Sorry but I have never seen an ugly model. I love Vera Wang clothes but her choice of models should be done by someone else.
sorry about that last comment about the ugly model
Well I personally agree that the model isn’t exactly pretty! She looks so sickly…
