L.A. Law Meets Monsoon Wedding

Pasadena Wedding ProcessionShe’s Indian; his family is Scottish; they’re both federal prosecutors who meet, fall in love, and stage a wedding the town is still talking about. (TV execs, are you listening??) Honoring the bride’s heritage, the groom arrived at the ceremony like a prince—perched atop a painted pachyderm who paraded his pulchritude down a prime Pasadena promenade, preceded by a passel of bhangra dancers and perky percussionists. The performance proceeded perfectly, thanks to the pre-arranged police parking permits. (Phew!) A bagpiper in full kilt regalia joined the procession, which wound up to the terrace of the Pasadena Museum of Art. At sunset, a Hindu Fire Ritual launched the Indian ceremony, for which the bride wore a beautiful crimson silk gown. Then the Western ceremony began with a California Supreme Court Justice singing Ave Maria. This highly personalized wedding of Napu & Tim Searight was featured on Diane Sawyer’s Primetime Wedding Special (unfortunately, they didn’t bring the elephant.)

More multi-cultural flair was on display at the Suhaag International Bridal Fair, where Here Comes The Guide staffer Lisa Edd was On the Scene: “My favorite part of the day was the fashion show. It began with a wonderful Indian dance performance, including adorable young children. I had a front row seat, which gave me an up-close view of some gorgeous gowns with both Indian and African patterns by Swati Couture and other designers. The models came in all shapes and sizes, just like real women! Part of the runway even had a chuppah (supplied by Certified By The Guide vendor Under The Chuppah.) The fair was a total blast!” Keep checking our Wedding Fairs page for Suhaag’s next event.

Real Weddings

scene_altI’m always interested in how an industry pro arranges her own “I Do” bash, and recently I chatted with Il Fornaio’s former Marketing Director Tammy Bradley (née Karpenko) for the details of her elegant garden ceremony at the incomparable Kohl Mansion. One romantic touch she incorporated into her ceremony was a butterfly release. Naturally, the sit-down reception was catered by Il Fornaio (yes, they now bring their award-winning Italian to you! Mmmmm…) and the turquoise blue-and-cream décor was inspired by Tiffany’s. Following suit was the beautiful two-layer fondant cake by Sonja Hong of Butterfly Cakes. Meanwhile, guests swayed to music provided by Soundsation. Tammy says The Guide was a great help in organizing all the elements: “Here Comes The Guide was my daily ritual when planning the wedding of my dreams.”

Laid Back Luxe in Half Moon Bay

Cetrella Bistro and CafeCetrella Bistro and Cafe's Wine Cellar Room

Recently, I decided to treat my sister to a fabulous 30th birthday (it’s a long story as to why the splurge, suffice it to say, I wasn’t a good big sister when we were young and I have a lot of latent guilt), and so we headed to the quaint town of Half Moon Bay. There we surrendered to the pampering embrace of the ever-fabulous Ritz-Carlton (trust me: everyone should stay at a Ritz at least once in their life!), and dined at Cetrella, an upscale yet welcoming bistro that’s been a top choice of Here Comes The Guide for some time. Cetrella is a wonderful place for a rehearsal dinner or any intimate celebration. The gorgeous interior and stylish décor set just the right note of casual elegance, while the staff treated us like long-time regulars. Also getting raves from us is the food, which is, in a word, superb (and my sis is one picky eater!). Cetrella, the Ritz and stirring ocean views…Half Moon Bay should be on everyone’s radar, whether for getting hitched or indulgent weekend getaways!
