Add a Little Voodoo to Your Wedding…

Even though I’m usually a total foodie, I have a not-so-secret addiction to doughnuts. I have doughnut magnets on my fridge. I call my cat “Alice Donut” as a nickname. I know every doughnut shop within a five mile radius of my apartment.

Googly Donut Magnets from Glamorous WhimsyIt’s only natural, then, that I would eventually find Voodoo Doughnuts. In addition to offering treats suitable for a bachelorette party, this Portland, Oregon institution is also a quirky wedding venue. A “coffee and doughnuts reception” sounds like music to my ears. If anyone is planning a destination wedding at Voodoo, send us pictures (and send me a Portland Cream doughnut!).

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Can’t Stop Thinking About Sam

Have you ever had one of those meals when you’re on vacation that you keep thinking about for weeks after you get home? You know, you’re sitting at work and all of a sudden you’re struck by an intense desire to eat at that restaurant again. Like, right NOW. You entertain thoughts of calling in sick, just to go back and have that food one more time?

Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon BayNever?

Then you haven’t been to Sam’s Chowder House, a gorgeous seaside restaurant in Half Moon Bay. That’s where my husband and I had the fabulous dinner, while we were in HMB celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary. Everything I ate was so excellent, from the calamari to the beet salad to the steak, that I’ve been obsessing about it ever since. Seriously, I think I need therapy. I’ve yet to call in sick to drive there for lunch, but I’ve been close several times.

I had a great time meeting owners Julie and Paul, who told me that they’re preparing a great new beachfront ceremony location to add to their already very wedding-friendly restaurant. Just imagine getting married right on the beach, steps from that beet salad. Heaven.

Daughter-in-Law Rules

Not to brag or anything, but I lucked out in the mother-in-law department. She’s never once tried to undermine my relationship with my husband, and we’ve always gotten along freakishly well. Even the wedding planning was easy. She was fine with whatever kind of wedding we wanted, as long as I really, truly loved her son, which I did. (Still do!)

The Daughter-in-Law Rules by Sally ShieldsHowever, I’ve known enough daughters-in-law to be fully aware of the potential problems MILs can add to the equation. My own mother spent years trying to gain approval from my dad’s super-traditional mom, and while she eventually succeeded in winning her mother-in-law over with her Southern grace and charm, I know it took a lot out of her. She could have used a book like Sally Shields’ The Daughter-in-Law Rules: 101 Surefire Ways to Manage (and Make Friends with) Your Mother-in-Law. In it, Sally identifies the power struggles between MILs and DILs in a thoroughly entertaining way, and offers practical solutions for resolving these issues before they become a major problem.

Sunday, October 26th is Mother-in-Law Day, and to celebrate we’re giving away Sally’s useful tips for free. The first 25 to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) will win an e-book version of The Daughter-in-Law Rules. Bonus points if you tell me a true horror story about your future mother-in-law. (Am I the only one who finds it funny that Mother-In-Law Day falls so close to Halloween?)
